One market. Several very different payment stacks.

Cards, ACH, FedNow and wallet-led checkout solve different problems. The right US payment setup depends on your business model, risks, margins and settlement needs.

MARKET BRIEF / 🇺🇸 NORTH AMERICA

What merchants need to know.

The United States has sophisticated card acquiring alongside bank-based payment rails and growing instant transfer infrastructure. A recurring SaaS company, restaurant, marketplace and B2B wholesaler may need very different combinations of processors, gateways, bank access and dispute controls.

FROM PRIMARY DOCUMENTATION

Nacha reported 35.2 billion ACH transactions in 2025; the Federal Reserve says FedNow is a 24/7 instant payment infrastructure offered via participating institutions.

02 / UNDERSTAND THE PAYMENT METHODS

Different rails. Different responsibilities.

Use this table to separate the payment method from the provider, the merchant contract and the underlying settlement mechanism.

METHOD / ROLEWHERE IT FITSWHAT TO VERIFY
01

Credit/debit cards

Card acquiring and networks

Relevant for retail, ecommerce, subscriptions and platforms.

Interchange model, authorisation optimisation, fraud, PCI scope and chargeback fees.

ACH credits and debits

Bank transfer rail

Batch-based account-to-account movement for payroll, bills, recurring debits and B2B.

FedNow

Instant bank-to-bank transfer rail

Digital wallets

Apple Pay and Google Pay can simplify card-backed checkout but may not change acquiring economics.

Device coverage, tokenisation, chargebacks and cross-border support.

Merchant payouts / marketplaces

Orchestrated money movement

Platforms require seller underwriting, split payments, payout timing and tax/compliance workflows.

03 / TURN RESEARCH INTO A DECISION

Find the questions worth asking.

Choose your operating use case before requesting a quote. A “supported country” label rarely tells you which legal entity, channel and settlement flow is included.

MERCHANT PATH / 01

Accept cards and wallets

Focus on card approval, chargebacks, POS/ecommerce support, total fees and omnichannel reconciliation.

Ask the provider

  • Which acquiring model and supported MCCs apply?
  • What is the effective blended cost including disputes and international cards?
  • How are card data and PCI responsibilities managed?
MERCHANT PATH / 02

Collect invoices and subscriptions by bank

ACH credit and debit are useful for B2B and repeat transactions but carry authorisation, return and settlement rules.

Ask the provider

  • Which ACH debit authorisations and mandates are supported?
  • How are returns and payment failures handled?
  • Does the provider support same-day ACH and customer-bank verification?
MERCHANT PATH / 03

Move money instantly or pay partners

FedNow participation is through eligible banks and service providers, not a universal merchant checkout feature.

Ask the provider

  • Does the sending and receiving institution support the chosen rail?
  • What payment use cases, limits and fraud controls are live?
  • Can payouts be reconciled reliably around the clock?
04 / KNOW THE RULES

Regulation should be part of the brief.

Authorities determine the operating framework. A provider’s merchant contract and first-party product documents then determine what your business can actually use.

01 / REGULATORY CHECKPOINT

ACH governed by Nacha

Nacha sets the ACH Network rules governing payment authorisation and participant responsibilities; ACH is not the same as a real-time rail.

Nacha ACH framework ↗
02 / REGULATORY CHECKPOINT

PCI DSS for payment-card data

The PCI SSC published PCI DSS v4.0.1 as a clarification revision. Compliance scope depends on the specific cardholder-data environment and service providers.

PCI SSC standard ↗
03 / REGULATORY CHECKPOINT

Consumer protections differ by product

CFPB Regulation E protects covered consumer electronic fund transfers; it does not mean every business-to-business payment is automatically covered.

07 / RESEARCH TRANSPARENCY

Primary sources, not borrowed opinions.

We favour central banks, supervisory authorities, payments-system operators, standards bodies and original vendor documentation. Evidence categories show what each link supports.

Editorial methodology · November 3, 2026

Provider features and regulatory scope can change. Each source is identified by type so merchants can distinguish authoritative policy from product marketing. Where a provider supports one country or payment method, this is not assumed to cover all legal entities, transaction types or channels. Reconfirm important claims directly before contracting.

08 / COMMON QUESTIONS

The practical answers you came for.

Is ACH the same as FedNow?+

No. ACH is generally a batch processing network with same-day and future-date settlement options. FedNow offers instant credit transfers through participating institutions 24/7.

Does any US PSP automatically offer FedNow?+

No. It depends on participating financial institutions and product integration. Verify both the rail and the merchant-facing service.

Does Regulation E protect every B2B transfer?+

No. Its primary protections concern covered consumer electronic fund transfers; commercial transfers may fall outside its scope.

Do small merchants have to think about PCI DSS?+

Card data security requirements depend on how a merchant accepts and handles cards. Hosted services can reduce the merchant’s direct card-data exposure but do not eliminate every responsibility.
